4 Signs You Should Ask for a Second Opinion

You leave the office using an uncertainty of your doctor. She's the one with all the MD. But something's not perfect. Should you get another opinion? Yes, say experts, and don't think twice. A new perspective can make all of the difference. Here, a few great reasons to schedule another appointment.

1. There has been no mention of a particular diagnosis. Even before your doc IDs your ailment, she should be able to let you know exactly what's likely going on--or at least the variety of possibilities, '' says Leana Wen, MD, writer of When Doctors Don't Listen. "If she does not, that is a huge red flag," she says.

2. Your own research doesn't match up. Once you have a diagnosis--and you have Googled the hell out of it--do not be afraid to question your doc's conclusion. "Does it really clarify how you're feeling?" Says Dr. Wen. Do your symptoms align with all the descriptions on health websites that are reputable? "If not, talk with your doc-- and if you still have concerns, see someone else."

3. You hear about just one possible treatment. "In virtually every instance, there's more than one treatment alternative," states Dr. Wen. "And sometimes a good option might be just patiently waiting." So you can decide what's right for you, your provider should present alternatives, along with their advantages and disadvantages.

4. You simply don't trust your physician. If you don't think she is taking you badly, or if you have any doubts about her proficiency, locate another specialist, says Health health editor Roshini Rajapaksa, MD. "It's your own body, so follow your instincts," she says. "It never hurts to get another opinion."
